North Ayrshire Council decided to support the development of town twinning in its area in 2004. The Largs Town Twinning Association (LTTA) was formed two years later, based on the work of a Steering Group, and first contact was made with the French town of Andernos–les-Bains. Following exchange visits, it was agreed to proceed with the twinning with the signing ceremonies taking place in Andernos-les-Bains in December 2008 and in Largs on 24th January 2009, the eve of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ayrshire and Scotland's famous poet, Robert Burns. (See the Gallery). The Provost of North Ayrshire is Patron of the Association. Since the official charter signing, exciting opportunities have arisen to develop links between the peoples of the two towns.
Friendship has also grown with Andernos's other two 'twin towns' of Nussloch in Germany and Segorbe in Spain although Largs is not officially twinned with either of them.
Regular hosting has started with visits to each other's town in alternate years. Eric Arnaud, President of Andernos town twinning group, with 33 visitors from the town, opened the 2011 Largs Viking Festival. In 2012, a group of 20 Largonians visited Andernos and stayed in French host homes.
Members of LTTA have visited Andernos at the time of their annual Oyster Festival and their Jazz Festival. These are very important occasions and include a procession, food, music and dancing…..in the streets
Largs joined in on the biennial twin town games between Andernos, Nussloch and Segorbe in 2009 (Andernos) and 2011 (Sgorbe). (See the Gallery). It was our turn to stage the Games in 2013.
Exciting links are encouraged through our primary schools and our secondary school, Largs Academy, through educational projects which are also fun. A group of eager 10/11 year olds from Capsus Primary School in Andernos visited Largs in 2011 and Brisbane Primary School played host along with the Association. French students also visited Largs Academy to share a science project in 2011. A return visit in 2012 by Largs students had to be cancelled due to an air traffic controllers strike in France!
We hold quiz nights, wine tastings, BBQs, race nights, a Fashion Show and run a promotional stall at Largs' Yuletide evening. We support the Viking Festival and entered a float in their parade a couple of years ago. You can keep up to date with planned activities on our Events page.
